The difference between Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counselling is a therapeutic approach which is a brief therapy of up to 18 weeks offering insight and understanding for the same conditions as Counselling & Psychotherapy that arise from more recent events rather than deeper psychological issues that arise from early experiences. Short term counselling provides a safe confidential environment where through the relationship with me clients are able to develop and implement substantial coping strategies to enable them to make the necessary changes within their lives.

Psychotherapy is a therapeutic approach which is longer term and focuses over time on the deeper emotional and psychological issues relating back to early experiences that often manifest into re-occurring conditions. Through the relationship with me clients are able to explore and gain deeper awareness of emotional issues and the foundation from which they occurred. This new insight and understanding enables clients to make the neccesary changes in their lives to deal with their emotional difficulties.

My approach to Counselling & Psychotherapy

It is my belief that I work in relationship with my clients where we discuss collaboratively and agree the amount of sessions required and the agenda of issues to be worked through in our time together. By reviewing our work on a regular basis we can make the necessary adjustments to enable us to achieve the desired goals that formed our plan.

I am and Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist with a focus on Relational Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy. However I incorporate Person Centred and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) into my practice if I feel it would be helpful to my clients. As a relational therapist I always discuss my approach and rationale behind it before incorporating it into my client work.

I offer an initial assessment to discuss the issues to be worked on as well as an opportunity for a potential client to explore whether they feel safe to work with me.

I maintain high standards of ethical practice abiding by the code of ethics and ethical framework set out by BACP. I attend regular supervision as part of my practice as set out by the BACP.
